The 5 F's trauma responses
N.B. There is no easy read for this one as it would be hard to cut down further. There are however, an infographic and translations are the bottom
Hi
So I'm going to talk about the 5 different ways the body can react to trauma. These are Fight, Flight, Fawn (Active and Passive), Freeze and Flop.
All of these responses are triggered by the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) which is responsible for all involuntary activities e.g. breathing, heart beating. The ANS has 2 branches to it - the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous systems.
Fight, Flight and Active Fawn are all types of hyperarousel and the sympathetic nervous system is responsible for these responses. These are often the first responses.
Passive Fawn, Freeze and Flop and all types of hypoarousel. It is a combination of the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous system that is responsible for Freeze, whilst it is the parasympathetic nervous system that is responsible for Passive Fawn and Flop. These reactions tend to be the secondary responses if Fight, Flight or Active Fawn will not work, or if the trauma becomes a prolonged trauma.
So what are they?
Fight - To aggressively challenge the threat. This may be a physical fight, but may equally mean an argument, being defensive or being irritable.
Flight - To remove yourself from the threat. This may be literal i.e. physically removing yourself from the room where the danger is. However, it can also mean emotionally distancing yourself from what is happening, avoiding tricky conversations, keeping yourself busy so as not to think about the threat.
Active Fawn - People pleasing. This is mainly defined by people constantly trying to anticipate other peoples moods and wants, and tries hard to fix things and maintain unity.
Freeze - Being physically frozen but having racing thoughts. It may present as procrastination, 'doom scrolling', brain fog or not being able to make decisions.
Passive Fawn - Maintains the peace. Will detach from their own opinions and values and simply 'go along' with the situation to maintain the peace and maintain their safety.
Flop - Collapse. The body suffers from things such a muscle weakness, physical exhaustion, low blood pressure and being totally numb.

Toh main trauma ke prati body ke react karne ke 5 alag-alag tareekon ke baare mein baat karne wali hoon. Yeh hain Fight, Flight, Fawn (Active aur Passive), Freeze aur Flop.
In sabhi responses ko Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) trigger karta hai. ANS body ki un sabhi involuntary activities ke liye zimmedar hota hai jinhe hum consciously control nahi karte, jaise saans lena aur dil ka dhadakna. ANS ki do branches hoti hain — sympathetic nervous system aur parasympathetic nervous system.
Fight, Flight aur Active Fawn sabhi hyperarousal ke types hain aur in responses ke liye sympathetic nervous system zimmedar hota hai. Yeh aksar sabse pehle aane wale responses hote hain.
Passive Fawn, Freeze aur Flop sabhi hypoarousal ke types hain. Freeze ke liye sympathetic aur parasympathetic nervous systems ka combination zimmedar hota hai, jabki Passive Fawn aur Flop ke liye parasympathetic nervous system zimmedar hota hai.
Yeh reactions aksar secondary responses hote hain jab Fight, Flight ya Active Fawn kaam nahi karte, ya jab trauma prolonged trauma ban jaata hai.
Toh yeh sab kya hain?
Fight — Threat ko aggressively challenge karna.
Yeh physical fight ho sakti hai, lekin iska matlab argument karna, defensive hona ya chidhchidhe ho jaana bhi ho sakta hai.
Flight — Khud ko threat se door karna.
Yeh literally danger wali jagah se physically door chale jaana ho sakta hai. Lekin iska matlab emotionally jo ho raha hai usse distance banana, difficult conversations se bachna, ya khud ko busy rakhna bhi ho sakta hai taaki threat ke baare mein sochna na pade.
Active Fawn — Logon ko khush rakhne ki koshish karna.
Iski sabse badi pehchaan yeh hai ki vyakti lagataar doosre logon ke moods aur wants ko pehle se samajhne ki koshish karta hai, cheezon ko theek karne ke liye bahut mehnat karta hai aur unity ya harmony banaye rakhne ki koshish karta hai.
Freeze — Body physically jaise freeze ho jaati hai, lekin dimaag mein thoughts bahut tezi se chal rahe hote hain.
Yeh procrastination, “doom scrolling”, brain fog ya decisions na le paane ke roop mein saamne aa sakta hai.
Passive Fawn — Shanti banaye rakhna.
Vyakti apni opinions aur values se disconnect kar leta hai aur situation ke saath bas “chal padta hai”, taaki shanti bani rahe aur woh khud ko safe rakh sake.
Flop — Collapse ya poori tarah gir jaana.
Body mein muscle weakness, physical exhaustion, low blood pressure aur bilkul numb mehsoos karna jaise effects ho sakte hain.
Main ek quiz karungi jisse aap dekh sakenge ki future mein trauma ke saamne aapka default response kaunsa hota hai.
